Evalution Question 3

Rough cut of Music Video

When we presented are rough cuts of our music video to the class the feedback we received was that the pace of our video was good, and they liked the idea of our rewind when the girls are in the park.

They also liked the close up of the leaves as it showed different shot types. The class enjoy the bit in the beginning when the two girls turn around together, but they thought we could have followed this through when they walked off as they didn’t really walk off at the same pace.

However, we did receive some negative feedback was that their was a lot of long gaps in our work, but the reason behind that was because we hadn't finish filming all the scenes. This made the narrative unclear for them to understand.

Music Video

Digipak Feedback

When Presenting our Digipak idea to the class we were given positive and constructive feedback. The positive feedback we received was that our idea fit with the conventions of an RnB album cover, they also liked the colours we used as they said they were quite natural which goes with the theme of our music video as it is quite a dreamy video. They said that our ideas showed we did research on what an RnB album covers look like.

Our constructive feedback we collected was that are title was too hidden, as they weren't sure whether it was a good idea or not and left them feeling a bit uncertain about it. But in our defends the reason for the title being like that is because most RnB album titles are like that, especially beyonce, she has had titles like that,so we wanted to keep with that convention. They said that the cloud theme was a bit too much but the reason for it, is to keep it with the theme of how dreamy the girl is in the music video and to also keep it looking quite natural. Some of the class was quite confused about the rose, but it was because of the way we drew it, as the layout of our paper was different to the way we would do it on photoshop, the rose is just going to be one picture of a rose that goes across the inside front and inside fold of the album, so when we do it on photoshop it won't be so confusing.

Magazine Advert Feedback

Our magazine advertisement was based on the conventions of an RnB advert, we looked at different ways in which Beyonce advertises her albums and from the different albums we looked at, we took the ideas of having the name of the artist in big, bold, black letters in order for it to stand out and in little, italic letters we had the name of the song, the reason for this was because in actual RnB adverts they usually have the artist name in bold to stand out for the audience to see clearly who the artist is.

We also had the release date of the album in big, black bold letters so are audience can know when the album is to be released. The reason for that is because the whole point of the advert is to inform the audience when the album will be out, so having that in bold it will immediately stand out and they will know straight away.

In the different magazine adverts that we looked up, we realised that a lot of them have some kind of critics information. So we decided to add what some critics thought about the album, in order for the audience to know how well it is and if it is worth buying. We had the stars in black because, we wanted them to stand out and went with the colour of the advert. Also because every single magazine advert we looked at had all the stars in black and this is usually the colour of the stars in the music industry.

We decided to have the main singer in the background because after researching a lot of Beyonce's and other RnB singer's  magazine adverts we realised that they usually have the main singer posing on the album, this is one of the most common conventions of  a magazine advert in the genre of RnB.

The colour of the background was that colour because, we wanted to go with the natural, dreamy theme of our music video. But also after looking at many more magazine adverts we decided to do it that colour because most RnB adverts are quite colourful but also simple. We may also change it and mess around with the colour more when it comes to making the advert as this is not the final decision.

In conclusion, we made sure are work was up to standards and to the best of our ability, I enjoyed watching our work improve and become what it is today.

Evalution Question 4

I used ‘You Tube’ to look at different RnB music videos in order to get different ideas of the types of techniques they use and different angle shots, so that we could add them in our music video in order to meet some of the obvious conventions of the genre, and to make our music video look professional. We also used You Tube to look at tutorials on how to do different techniques on Premiere Pro and I personally used it to learn how to use photoshop as I wasn’t that great at using it.

We used the ‘camera’ in order to film our music video, we also used it to take photos in order to put them on our blogs' and in our booklet of our digi pak as it made it look like a professional digi pak because usually artist in RnB genres have photos of them working, which we wanted to do as well, so we can show ourselves working.

We used ‘survey monkey’ in order to ask our target audience what they wanted to see and expect in a music video in RnB, so the survey monkey website was a good way to gain feedback and gave us an idea of what types of things to include in our music video and what type of song they would like to hear.

We used ‘amazon’ in order to do some research on what a CD cover looked like. On amazon I searched Cd's like ‘Beyonce’, ‘Kelly Rowland’, and many more, in order for me to see what current RnB artist CD covers looked like. This gave me some ideas in to how to make my CD cover look like. For example one of the main things that I realised was that they usually had the artist face on the cover, which we then went on to also use, as it was an obvious convention and we wanted to kind of do this but with a twist.

We used ‘photoshop’ to make our digi pak and magazine adverts as this programme allowed us to use lots of different techniques in order to give our work a professional finish.
We used ‘Adobe premiere pro cs3’ to do most of our work; we did our editing for our music video on this programme, this programme in able us to use different transitions and editing tools, to make our music video look smooth and real.

We used ‘google’ to find different websites so we could get information on artist in the RnB genre and find different ideas on how to use most of the software.

I used ‘wikipedia’ in order to find background history on ‘Beyonce’ like her dress sense and basic history on her, so i could find out what types of things she likes. Also I used this website for information on conventions on RnB music videos and artist.

I used my ‘facebook’ in order to get some of my target audience for our music video to answer our survey so we could find out what they wanted to see in the music video. I think face book was a good source to gain feedback from because most of our target audience use it.

I used ‘blogger’ to blog most of my feedback and to also gain feedback as well, I used this website to also post my survey and information on ‘beyonce’ and this is the website I used the most to do most of my work.

Finally I used ‘Beyonce’s official website’ to find out information on her and see the different types of music videos she has done in order to get some kind of an idea on what she wears and how her make- up is done in her videos. Also to see what type of editing she has, and what types of story lines and dance routines featured in her music videos.

Music Video- Evalution Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

 Frame 1

The reasons why I have chosen this frame is because this kind of effect has become a convention of the RnB genre. So within this frame we have used the conventions of the genre as it gives a very interesting and exciting effect to the music video. The reasons why it makes it interesting is because it gives the audience a chance to see more then one image in one part of the video, as it goes with the tempo of the song. Our song is very fast tempo and we wanted to add an effect that will allow us to pack a number of images at the same time keeping to the tempo of the music, so after researching  Drake 'headlines' we found this kind of effect and used the crop tool to make it work. I think this frame is very eye catchy and really gets the audience in the tempo and mood of the song.

Frame 2

The reason why I have chosen the second frame of the sun is because although the RnB genre doesn't often have a natural theme to it, we decided to challenege this convention becasue of the storyline we had in our music video. I think it gives a nice, dreamy effect to the music video as most of the audience wouldn't expect this from a RnB video especially because our song has a very fast pace to it. I also chose this frame because it is a nice simple shot of the sun and we didn't have to do any further editing on it as the camerawork was very good, and it went very well with the lyrics of the song. It also gave a natural effect to the video, which was a nice, relaxing part to watch.

Frame 3

The reason why I have chosen this frame is becasue having subtitles within this genre has become popular, the reason for this is becasue a lot of RnB music videos have a little bit of a talking scene at the start of their video. Within these talking scenes the characters often use colloquial language, so some people find it hard to understand what they might be saying. The reason why this frame has been chosen is because, we wanted to add subtitles, but instead of just adding subtiles we thought to develop the idea and have the words in a chat format on the screen. I think this effect made the audience automatically more involved in the video has they didn't just have to watch the character texting they got to see what she was texting. We also got this idea from a the TV soap 'Hollyoaks' where they use this texting effect.

Frame 4

I have chosen this frame becasue having shots of the characters to the side gives a more varitey of shot type for the audience as seeing the characters from the same angle can make the audience be bored and uninterested of the music video. Most RnB genres have different types of shots of their characters to give the audience different angles to look at, in order to get them more involved.

Frame 5

The frame of the split screen is a massive convention in RnB a lot of artist use this kind of effect because it enables the audience to see more then one image on the screen and is a good idea to use when two characters are having a conversation on the phone. I chose this frame because I like the fact that we used a split screen because it allows the audience to see the facial expressions of both of the characters when they are talking to each other and this lets the audience know through their facial expressions what they are, each feeling and thinking and how they are reacting to what one another is saying.

Frame 6

A lot of RnB music videos use a lot of shot types, the reason why I chose this frame is because it gives the audience an overall view of the location, the two main characters and an idea of what might happen, just from the positioning of the shot. I think this goes completely with the conventions of the RnB genre as the main conventions often feature bright lighting, a male and female and a different angle, so the way we framed the shot made it very interesting and revealing to the audience because they didn't just see the actors they also could see the whole location and what kind of weather it was on that day, which was the whole point.

Frame 7

The frame of our main character on the bus challenges the conventions of our genre because not often do we see an RnB artist singing on a bus they are often in a studio singing with a dance rountine especially 'Beyonce'. The reason why I chose this frame is because we challenge the convention of it, by having her sing on the bus as we had a story line, I think this went more with our music video because in a way it was unpredictable as most people expect her to be singing in a studio with a dance rountine, so it gave the audience a surprise.

Frame 8

The frame of the characters playing in the park was chosen because often in this genre they don't feature this kind of setting and location in a park, as most of the time the location and acting is the artist dancing, singing etc.... but the reason for this frame was to show that the characters are full of joy, are young and free and just basically having fun. We wanted to show this because it followed our story line and also makes the audience chill out and have fun with the characters.

Frame 9

Often in RnB music videos they show a phone or ipod which starts the beginning of the song and shows the songs name and artist. The reason why I chose this frame is because I think it was a really effective and great idea and makes our music video look professional as it gives the audience more shots to see in the video instead of always seeing the characters. So using this shot grabs the audience back in after a long introduction to our song.

Magazine Advert FeedBack

When presenting our magazine advert to the class, we received a lot of positive feedback as they liked our overall idea of it as they said that they liked the way it linked to our digipaks, because it looked like an advertisement of an RnB genre advert.
We were given one piece of contractive feedback, which was that they weren’t sure on the background cover. The colour is a creamy colour, the reason why we chose this colour was to go with the whole idea of a dreamy effect which we feel goes and links with our music video and digipaks, but when making it on the photoshop we will play around with different coloured backgrounds.

RnB Album Cover

Most RnB Album Covers have the artist on them, the artist is standing in a particular way or posing in a particular way. Usually the female artist picture at the front of the Album cover is either a close up of their face or them standing up and showing the full length of them, it sometimes is a medium shot of them as well. 4Who You Are

Loud
Above & Beyonce [Dvd+CD]

Also in an RnB cover the text of the artist name is written in fonts that go with the artist theme of music. For example 'Jessie J's' Album cover the font of the way her name is written suits the kind of songs she sings like crazy, up beat and the style it is written in presents this because it looks crazy. The other three have quite plain letters but  makes it look simply and nice and you can tell that they will have songs on their Album that will be quite relaxing and still good and fast paced.

Digipak Research

What is Digipak?

Digipak is a patented style of CD, DVD packaging. It has become popular by holding CD and DVD’s from the same artist, combining the release of a new CD with a DVD.

Digipaks typically consist of a book-style paper board or card outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside.

What is the purpose of digipack?

Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak

What should a digipak include?

I think a digipak should include images of the singer,  at the place they used to film the music video. our digipak will have the main singer on the front, where we filmed our music video. The colouring should be according to the genre of the music video and the mood of the song because the audience can understand what type of song it will be, if the colours are bright then the audience will know that the song is fun and loud, whereas if the colours are dark and dull then the audience will know and have some kind of an idea that the song is depressing and sad. Our digipak will have bright colours as it is a upbeat song. I think on the front case of the digipak there should be titles of the singer and in more little letters saying what songs their is, on the back should be the list of songs the CD has on it.

FeedBack From Class

When we presented are rough cut,  music video to the class the feedback we received was that the pace of our video was good, and they liked the idea of our rewind when the girls are in the park. They also liked the close up of the leaves as it showed different shot types. The class enjoy the bit in the beginning when the two girls turn around together, but they thought we could have followed this through when they walked off as they didn’t really walk off at the same pace.

We did receive a few negatives from the class the biggest one was that there was a lot of long gaps but we will work on this as we are to finish filming by the end of the week.  Due to the gaps in the music video they thought the narrative wasn’t clear, which meant that they thought it wasn’t looking like a music video because we still needed to include the lip-syncing, and they thought there was a couple of areas where the pacing could have been better, but we are to improve all these negatives as soon as we have all our footage.

Half Term Filming

On Monday me and my partner Georgia were going to film the majority of our music video but our actors were unable to make it, so instead we went around parks and took pictures for our digi packs, of flowers as we want our digi packs to look very imaginative and natural, to go with the kind of fairy tale we are having in our music video's storyline.

On the Tuesday we then filmed the beginning of our music video as the actors were available and we used a friend’s bedroom, as the first scenes involve a girly conversation in the main characters room. However we were only able to film the beginning of our music video during the week because our main actress had a swollen leg so we were unable to get her singing the song in the street as she wasn’t able to walk probably.

We came across some problems during filming, the first problem was that our main character was unable to do the walking scenes as she had an accident with her leg during her dance class, so this meant that we didn't have some of our main parts filmed. But we then did the scenes we were able to do. Another problem that we came across was that our male character didn't tell us that he was going to go abroad during the week so we then had to work with the people we had.

We did have some positive filming time, the weather was very nice and sunny which meant the lightening of our  video was good. Also there was a day when all of our actors and actress turned up which meant that we could film that day without distractions.

Conventions of Our Music Video

The genre of our Music Video is R&B, the common conventions of this genre is that most of the time men are topless and wear jeans; they do this for them to show off their bodies. We are following this convention is part of our Music Video as it is a very important one I would say, because of our target audience our older teenagers so they would be draw in from this.

The most common convention within an R&B Music Video is a choreographed dance routine especially in most of Beyonce’s Videos. This convention is to represent the artist as fun, loving people and to add excitement to the song especially in a fast tempo song like the one we have chosen to do. But we have decided to go against this convention because we would like to tell a story in our video which kind of goes with the lyrics expect for the last bit of it, i think this will get our audience more interested in the video as they would like to see what will happen in the end.

In most Music Videos when the song has a fast tempo they usually have the conventions of bright colours, flashy cars, jewellery, females in a powerful light. We will use the convention of bright colours and jewellery to make everything in the video look like the characters are having fun and enjoying themselves and to make the audience feel part of the action, but the rest of conventions I have mention we will not use because it doesn’t really go with the story that we have for the song.

Animatic Feedback

When presenting our animatic video to the class we were given feedback which was that the class enjoyed the pace at which are shots were put as they went at the same speed as the music. We were also told to improve the timing of the shots as some shots went on for too long, but during these long shots their will be action and singing that was the reason for the shots being longer than the other ones.

Beyonce Research

In our music video we are doing a song by Beyonce, and after doing our survey we notice that the majority of the people that answered liked Beyonce.

So we decided to do some research into Beyonce to find out why people like her so much and what makes her original. So I looked at four of her music videos to see similarities and differences of how she has changed in them and what people actually like.

At first I looked at her music video ‘why don’t you love me’, which received 4,599,400 views on you tube, 17,212 of these viewers liked the video and 786 disliked the music video. The reason why I think a lot of them liked the video was because she adds craziness to it and makes the people enjoy watching her, in the video she is playing a house wife and makes the music video looks very traditional but with a twist because in old times women will stay at home and clean, and this is exactly what she is doing, she is trying to be a good housewife but she still isn’t being loved. And the twist is, is that she has some amazing outfit in the video and it is kind of funny because she is cleaning but her outfits are nice. So I think they like it because her music video brings out a really crazy and fun side of her. A comment that was left underneath the music video was ‘beyonce could wear all the skippiest outfits in the world and still be the classiest woman out there’.

I then watched another music video of hers, which was ‘Diva’ which received 39,588,422 views and 24,565 people, liked it and 1,173 people disliked. In the video it is really different to the first one I watched because in this one she is powerful, her outfits and sense of style is great, she has a dance routine which people enjoy watching and trying to learn, and once again she has that craziness that I think people love about her, and just her whole attitude when she is singing is really positive and gives a positive vibe when u watch her. Some under the video commented ‘her outfits make her look cute, best dancer ever’. This just shows how much people like her.

I think looked at her most recent video she has made to see just how much she has changed and grown, the music video is called ‘1+1’ which so far has 10,946,746 views, 60,737 like this video and 9,030 dislike it. This latest video is very good as it plays with lightening and shadows a lot, again she has this powerful touch to her and this time she has dance routine but it is quite simple, and her make is very well done. A comment under this video was ‘wonderful video is weird, simple but great’

Music Video Survey Response

In our media lesson we were asked to make a survey, in order to find out what are target audience expected from our Music Video. In our survey we asked the audience 10 questions, on all different types of things, to see what they wanted in the music video. In total 54 people answered our survey which we think is a good result as we now know what to include for certain.

From the survey we have learnt the types of things the majority of our target audience will like to see in the music video and this is gives us some kind of an idea of what to exactly add in the video, instead of just guessing what they will like to see. So now we are able to take everything to consideration and give the majority what they will like to see but also add our own style to the video.

The survey has given us some positive feedback so we can use to make our video. We will like to add our own touch to the video to get the audience watching, and surprised.

You can check out our survey by clicking here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MBGTXG3

Katy Perry's 'Firework' Video

I don’t think Katy Perry’s ‘firework’ video deserved the best video of the year award because there wasn’t anything really interesting about it. All she is doing in the video is sending out a message to people that they should be more confident, yes it is a good message but, I personally don’t want to listen to a song that kind of makes me feel depressed, there were other music videos that had a more interesting and funny meaning to them. I also don’t think it deserved it because there weren’t any special effects, which actually stood out; it was only fireworks coming out of her chest, that only stood out, but other than that anyone could have made a music video like that as the scenery was quite basic I think. When I listen and watch Music Video’s I kind of like to escaped from reality and not have to think about things that are worrying me, whereas in this song and music video it kind of makes you think about reality and your life which is quite annoying because I myself like to listen to songs where in the video the artist is in some fantasy world, for example ‘in like a hot desert, or somewhere on the beach like in shipwreck island’.

There are other music videos that have this effect, of fantasy, so I think this music video didn’t deserve the award as there is much better out their especially nowadays as technology has improved and the editing is much better than years ago.
